Education Briefs

January 25th, 2006 issue

EXPANSION - The English International School in Prague (www.eisp.cz), which so far has had students of up to age 15, is expanding its senior years, which, with the opening of a new purpose-built school, will enable it to offer the International Baccalaureate. The school is also raising awareness about its Early Years facility, the Green House in Kunratice, Prague 4, with Open Days in Feb. 8 (See details on the school's Web site). EISP has also started a program for its Czech staff to receive training for the National Vocational Certificate in early-years education. This International qualification is not currently available in the Czech Republic.

DIRECTORS - The PCFE Film School in Prague (www.filmstudies.cz) was nominated as one of the top 15 film schools in the world in the January edition of Premiere magazine. The Mexican edition of the international film monthly will be a popular conversation topic at PCFE's new school café, which opens Jan. 30, the same day the school opens its studios, featuring a 1970s home interior, with living room, bedroom and blue-screen room. On Feb. 25 Czech actor Herbert Lom, 89, famous for roles in The Pink Panther films, will be guest speaker at the school as part of the Screening with Directors series, followed Feb. 26 by director Agniezka Holland. Czech writer/director Petr Zelenka spoke to PCFE students Nov. 25 about the challenges of working with nonactors on his award-winning Year of the Devil.

PARLIAMENT - Students at the British International School of Prague (www.bisp.cz) attended the European Youth Parliament in Bari, Italy (www.bari2005.com), in November, in which young people from all over the world spent a week debating current European issues. They competed in heats and prepared for the General Assembly, in which the finalists debated a chosen topic before the lord mayor of Bari and his invited VIPs and dignitaries. The Czech Republic was represented by eight students, six of whom were from BISP.

STARTUP - The Christian International School of Prague (www.cisprague.org) celebrated its first year of operations in autumn, after having been started by a group of parents interested in an excellent education from a Christian perspective at a price they could afford, using facilities of an elementary school in Vinohrady. The school's mandate calls for: philosophy, excellence, affordability, a relationally nurturing environment and flexibility, exemplified by meeting the needs of families who live far from school or who are home schooling. With an initial enrollment of 10 children ages 6 to 15, the school ended last year with 18 students and currently has 25 children in grades 1, 2, and 4–11. The CISP also works closely with Šalamoun preschool to provide early education.

GIFTED - The European Council for High Ability (www.echa.ws) is dedicated to helping parents and highly gifted children to exchange information and learn about particular issues that face such students. For more than 10 years Czech psychologist Eva Vondrakova, who is President of the Czech ECHA, has been organizing monthly meetings of the Club for Parents of Gifted Children. She works in cooperation with the Slovak colleague Jolana Laznibatova, a psychologist who specializes in gifted-children's education and heads the School for Gifted Children in Bratislava. At the ECHA conference in Bratislava in November, the organization considered the cases studies of three gifted boys, ages 9 to 10, all of them extremely successful at school, with a broad range of interests and atypical experiences with education, following their progress from the preschool on. For updates on upcoming programs check the Czech-language Web site for the local chapter (talent-nadani.xf.cz).
