FIRE - Prague's replica of London's Globe theater burned to the ground Nov. 12. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The Globe, which was built in 1999 on the Výstaviště fairgrounds in Prague 7, was modeled on the Elizabethan theater where many of William Shakespeare's plays were first preformed.

ROMA - A hospital that sterilized a Romany woman in 2001 must issue an apology but is not liable for compensation, the regional court of Ostrava ruled Nov. 11. Romany women were routinely sterilized in communist Czechoslovakia, but doctors in this case said they sterilized her because a third Caesarean section would be dangerous.

FOOTBALL - The Czech Republic is one step closer to qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, thanks to a 1–0 victory over Norway Nov. 12. The last time the Czechs had a team in football's biggest tournament was in 1990. They play Norway again Nov. 16, and need only draw to qualify.

RESIGNED - Agriculture Minister Petr Zgarba announced his resignation Nov. 10 in the wake of disputed transactions at the Land Fund, where valuable property designated for a Prague ring road was sold at prices vastly lower than market value. Social Democrat Member of Parliament Jan Mládek will replace Zgarba.

ART - Kateřina Šedá is the 2005 winner of the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize for artists under 35. The 28-year-old artist accepted the award from former President Václav Havel in a Nov. 10 ceremony at Prague's Municipal Library, where works by all six finalists are on display. She will receive cash awards totaling around 150,000 Kč ($6,000) and a six-week residency in New York City.
