Biz WeekNews & notes | Search restaurants | Archives STEEL - The Evraz Group of Russia has completed the acquisition of the government's approximately 99 percent stake in Vítkovice Steel, the company announced Nov. 15. Evraz won the tender in July after an eight-month, bitterly contested privatization process. The final acquisition of Vítkovice was delayed by an 11th hour court injunction that temporarily blocked the transfer of shares of the steel manufacturer. OFFICE - Dimension Data, a global IT services provider with headquarters in South Africa, announced the opening of an office in the Czech Republic Nov. 9. The office will primarily service the company's existing multinational clients with operations in the Czech Republic. Derek Cummins, who has 13 years of experience in the IT and telecommunications industries, was appointed country manager. EQUAL - Computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard (HP) has been honored as the best equal-opportunity provider in the Czech Republic by the Gender Studies Institute. Nineteen companies participated in the contest, including IBM and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The jury was most impressed by HP's Top Talent List, a program to identify and train potential female managers. ENGINEERING - Industrial Group Holding of K&K Capital Group (KKCG) bought 50 percent of engineering company Vítkovice Holding Nov. 9. Industrial Group Holding KKCG, controlled by the Czech entrepreneur Karel Komárek, will become the largest engineering group in Central and Eastern Europe when the transaction is complete. HIGHWAY - The section of the planned D47 highway that goes through Ostrava, north Moravia, will be completed in 2007, a year earlier than originally planned, the Road and Motorway Directorate (RSD) recently announced. Good weather this fall has allowed construction of the section to move along faster than expected. TOLL - Kapsch was recommended to the Cabinet Nov. 11 as the winner of the tender to become supplier of the e-toll system on Czech highways. In 2007 vehicles weighing more than 12 metric tons are supposed to begin paying tolls on the country's 970 kilometers (603 miles) of highways.
