Spinning in their graves

Dance parties headline Halloween weirdness

Blaq Mummy's Rev. Feedback returns with his 'ugliest, scariest' show.

Partygoers, parents and even procrastinators — this year's Halloween celebrations offer a little something for everybody. From candy corn for the kiddies to sexy suprises for singles, most bases are well covered. Regardless of age group, the parties are heavy on the treats and there are a few tricks to be played as well. Costume contests abound, so now is the time to come up with your award-winner. Best-dressed will get a ticket out of town. So, too, may worst-dressed.

Our pick for premier costume soiree is the Aliens vs. Mummies Halloween Extravaganza at Radost. Games, tarot readings and contests take place throughout the night, with best costume getting two tickets to London. Three DJs, including special guest Tim Otis featuring MC Sticky D, lead up to a midnight rock show by Prague regulars Blaq Mummy. Lead singer the Rev. Verse Feedback has taken a vow to rock in honor of the God of Feedback, and says the five-piece group plans to "play longer, harder, uglier and scarier" for their seventh annual Halloween performance.

A roundup of other parties, in chronological order:

Saturday night, Oct. 29

Experience "Halloween unfiltered" at one of the places where Prague's expat Halloween got its start. Jáma is serving a special menu from the grave that offers fingers — both chicken and not. Quaff a vial of witch's brew free just for walking through the door, and stay for raffles throughout the night. Waitresses will be dressed in authentic bones, and the night comes to a climax with the usual "sexy surprise." (V Jáme 7, Prague 1–New Town, tel. 224 222 383)

Halloween Extravaganza

When: Saturday, Oct. 29, starting at 9 p.m.
Where: Radost
Admission: Free in costume, women free until 11:30

Saturday, Oct. 29, 8 p.m.

If you believe that size matters, check out the Halloween party that claims to be the biggest in Prague. Monster Ball III will fill three stages at Holesovice's Cross Club. Plastic People of the Universe are on the bill, along with some mystical Mexican funk from Pablo's Majik Karpet. The dance stage will feature housebeats, while a chill-out room offers a place to relax. Admission is 150 Kc ($6) if you show up as you are, 120 Kc if you come in costume. (Plynární 23, Prague 7–Holesovice, tel. 736 535 053)

Monday, Oct. 31, 4 p.m.

Halloween without at least one viewing of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is like Christmas without watching vaguely creepy Claymation elves making toys in Santa's workshop. That's why Bohemia Bagel will be showing the classic as a kickoff to its third annual family-friendly celebration. After the movie, the children's room turns into a haunted house. For 70 Kc apiece, your little goblins can carve their own pumpkins. (Masná 2, Prague 1–Malá Strana, tel. 224 812 560)

Thursday, Nov. 3, 10 p.m.

For those who forgot to mark their calendars, didn't get enough of their All Hallow's Eve fix or just want to squeeze every last crown out of their costume, there is one event so late that it might as well be called an early Halloween '06 party. Wenceslas Square's rooftop nightclub Duplex is putting on a special Halloween performance, with special guest DJ Orbith and guest DJ Marquee. (Václavské nám. 21, Prague 1–New Town, Tel. 224 232 319)
