JAHN - Deputy Prime Minister for the Economy Martin Jahn announced his resignation Oct. 17, citing concerns that the leading Social Democratic Party of Prime Minister Jirí Paroubek is warming to the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia as a strategic partner. Jahn will step down by year's end to work in an executive position in the private sector.

VISAS - The Czech Republic wants the European Union to impose visa requirements against Canada unless the country abolishes its visa requirement for Czechs. The Canadian government links its stand to the United States' strategy but will review the rule in 2007.

BRAVERY - President Václav Klaus will honor murdered TV Nova editor Michael Velísek with the Medal for Bravery on Czechoslovak Independence Day, Oct. 28. Velísek was shot to death last month on Karlovo namestí when he tried to help a woman who was being attacked.

ASYLUM - Russian businessman Oleg Orlov, who faces charges of trafficking in military materials, has applied for asylum in the Czech Republic, delaying his extradition to Ukraine. Orlov is accused of organizing the deals in the Czech Republic.

DOCTORS - A Czech medical team working in earthquake-ravaged Pakistan is performing one to three operations a day, according to Petr Svoboda of the Brno traumatology hospital. The team arrived last Thursday and was to stay until Oct. 21, but they are close to spending the 25 million Kc ($1 million) the government authorized for the mission.

UNIPETROL - The Civic Democrats have filed a criminal complaint against Paroubek and several members of his Cabinet for their role in the 2004 sale of Unipetrol. ODS deputy group Chairman Vlastimil Tlusty´ cited a Polish investigation that found that the company that bought Unipetrol, PKN Orlen, received a 5.3 billion Kc discount.
