MERKEL - Prime Minister Jirí Paroubek said he anticipated the recent resolution of the German national election, which installed Angela Merkel as the country's new chancellor. Germany's Social Democrats are to remain in charge of foreign affairs in the new administration, and Paroubek said there would be little change in Czech-German relations.

FOUND - Families of seven Czech mountaineers who were attempting to conquer Pakistan's Nanga Parbat have finally made contact with the climbers, who were missing for two days after a massive earthquake ripped through the country Oct. 8. The team turned up at a youth hostel 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the quake's epicenter and were not injured.

ROTTEN - One-third of shops sell old or rotten food, a survey in Mladá fronta Dnes shows. The survey inspected supermarkets, hypermarkets and discount outlets across the country and found violations in 38 of them. Half the cases involved rotten fruit and vegetables; 10 stores sold rotten meat.

KOZENY´ - The Irish government stripped fugitive financier Viktor Kozeny´ of his Irish citizenship following his arrest last week in the Bahamas on bribery charges. Kozeny´ has been on the lam from the Czech Republic since 1995 and is wanted in a series of privitization scams that bilked 80,000 Czechs out of their savings.

WEAPONS - The Czech Republic is giving Iraq weapons that will be used by special security forces charged with protecting Iraqi cultural heritage. The weapons include 1,500 submachine guns and 50 machine guns, along with regular rifles and uniforms. The value of the donation was 1 million Kc ($40,400).
