SACKED - Justice Minister Pavel Nemec dismissed Marie Benesová Sept. 29 as supreme state attorney, saying the two had different ideas of how the Supreme State Attorney's Office should work. Nemec said Benesová mishandled media appearances and committed a crime when she accused his spokesman of taking bribes. Renata Vesecká, a regional state attorney in Hradec Kralové, east Bohemia, will replace her.

STRIKE - Hospitals are calling on health insurance companies to cancel their contracts with private doctors if they participate in a strike Oct. 6, saying the work stoppage with keep patients from receiving medical care. Doctors are striking over a deepening financial crisis in the nation's health-care system.

IRAQ - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani discussed increased cooperation with Czech firms in rebuilding his country's war-damaged infrastructure during an Oct. 3–5 visit to Prague. On his first stop during a tour of Europe, Talabani held talks with President Václav Klaus on the security situation and the role of Czech firms in the reconstruction of oil refineries and power plants.

MURDER - Jirí Pasovsky´ will spend five years in jail for killing the Nigerian consul and wounding his secretary in an attack at the African nation's embassy in 2003. But Pasovsky´'s lawyers are trying to get him off on account of his poor health: He lay on a bed during his trial proceedings.

ROTUNDA - Archaeologists have uncovered a Romanesque rotunda consecrated to St. Wenceslas after his death on the site of a former dungeon in Malá Strana, near Malostranské námestí. Few such rotundas still stand in the Czech Republic, the oldest dating to the 10th century. The new find will soon open to the public.
