CLASSICAL

Now in its 15th year, Prague Autumn, or Pražský podzim, runs through Oct. 2. This week the Symphony Orchestra of Russia plays as suite from War and Peace Sept. 25 and an operatic recital of Mascagni, Verdi, Puccini and Leoncavallo Sept. 26. Both events are in the Rudolfinum.

František Preisler conducts the Žofín Palace Chamber Orchestra, with Irena Chřibková an organ and Olga Kalvodová on harp in an unusually large-scale event in the International Organ Festival. Sept. 22 at 7, Bazilika sv. Jakuba

Out-of-the-ordinary venues across Prague's most colorful neighborhood host events in the Nekonvenční žižkovský podzim, or Unconventional Žižkov Autumn, festival, now in its ninth year. The festival kicks off with a works by Czech composers at the Žižovská radnice Sept. 22 at 7:30. The festival runs through the middle of November.

The 14th annual Svatováclavské slavnosti festival celebrates Václav, one of the patron saints of the Bohemia, with concerts in several churches and palaces until Sept. 27. The closing concert is in Černinský pálac Sept. 27 at 7:30 with the North Bohemian Philharmonic Teplice.

Gabriela Deméterová plays violin with the Prague Symphony Orchestra. The program is highlighted by Suk's Fantasia for violin and orchestra and his symphonic poem Praga. Jirásek's Praga Mystica and a symphony by Voříšek are also featured. Sept. 27 at 8, Smetana Hall, Obecní dům

OPERA

Smetana's Libuše combines some of the cheerful folksiness of The Bartered Bride and the nationalist fervor of Dalibor. This longish opera about the marriage between the legendary woman who founded Prague was used to open the National Theater and is only performed on special occasions. In Czech with English titles. JAZZ, ROCK, ETC.

The band known for their dark sunglasses and stage choreography, Laura a její tygřI launches a new CD, their first one in quite a while. Sept. 22 at 9, Lucerna Music Bar

DJ Richard Dorfmeister, who has remixed Madonna and Depeche Mode, brings his live act Tosca to town for the first time. The live set will be followed by more than two hours of DJing. Sept. 23 at 8, Divadlo Archa

Slovak blues and jazz singer Peter Lipa unveils his new CD and DVD. It's a confusing case of deja vu all over again since the discs are titled Live in Akropolis Prague and the concert is of the same songs at the same venue. Sept. 25 at 7:30, Palác Akropolis

The saxophonist and guitarist of the Plastic People, Vráťa Brabenec and Joe Carnation, jam with Erno Šedivý and guests from Canada. Sept. 25 at 9, Vagon

A trio of Pavel Jakub Ryba on guitar, Petr Venkrbec on sax and Jiří Kollman musically ask you to Mind the Step in the ongoing Jazz at the Castle, or Jazz na Hradě, festival. See Stage, page B6, for more. Sept. 25 at 8, Románské sklepení, Starý královský palác, Prague Castle

Founding member of Weather Report, jazz bassist Miroslav Vitouš joins actor Jaroslav Dušek for an evening of music and performance in Czech called Miroslav a Jaroslav. Sept. 26 and 27 at 8, Divadlo Archa

Australian electronic dance band Loonaloop grew out of Tribal Drift and counts trance, world beat and house among its influences. Sept. 27 at 8, Abaton

OTHER

Vinohrady used to be, not surprisingly, the royal vineyards. Not much wine is made there anymore, although there still is some wine made in Prague 2's Havličkovy sady. Vinohradské vinobraní keeps traditions alive by bringing in wine and freshly fermented burčák to go along with historical re-enactments, live music and other cultural programs at Havličkovy sady, náměstí Míru, náměstí Jiřiho z Poděbrad and Karlovo náměstí from Sept. 23 to 25.

Billed as a happening, When things go uphill with you (Když to s tebou jede do kopce) has theater, exhibitions and workshops as part of the Weeks for Mental Health. Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m., Petřín Hill between Nebozízek and the maze
