CLASSICAL

Northern Italian organist Alessandro Bianchi is the founder of an association called Amici dell'Organo, and he lectures and writes about the instrument. He comes to the International Organ Festival to play a selection of work from J.S. Bach up through more modern works by Marcel Dupré and Craig S. Lang. Sept. 8 at 7, Bazilika sv. Jakuba

A charity concert to raise money for LORM, a society that helps the deaf and blind, is held under the auspices of the British ambassador to the Czech Republic. Eighty members of the Northern England Chorale will perform Brahm's Requiem in German. Sept. 10 at 6:30, Kostel sv. Salvatora

Pianist Fujiko Hemming has a huge following in Japan, where she can sell out the largest venues in less than a day. She plays a Beethoven piano concerto with the Dvořák Symphony Orchestra. Dvořák's From the New World is also on the bill. Sept. 11 at 9, Smetana Hall, Obecní dům

One of the highlights of the fall season, Pražský podzim starts Sept. 12 with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg playing works by Czech composers at the Rudolfinum. The 15th edition of the festival runs through Oct. 2 at various venues. See Stage, page B2.

Czech music aficionado Sir Charles Mackerras leads the Prague Symphony Orchestra in three works by Dvořák: the overture to In Nature's Realm and Symphonies No. 8 and No. 9. The latter is better known as From the New World. Sept 13 at 7:30, Smetana Hall, Obecní dům

Prague 9 shows its civic pride with the Nine Times Nine, or Devětkrát devět, festival. The festival runs through Sept. 29 with events in churches, a park and the Town Hall. One highlight this week is Epoque Quartet at Kostel sv. Krista Krále, Sept. 14 at 6.

OPERA

The first opera premiere of the new season is a co-production with Riga and Dublin opera houses. Janáček's Jenůfa has sets and costumes by Daniel Dvořák and stage direction by Jiří Nekvasil. Sept. 11 (premiere) and 14 at 7, National Theater

JAZZ, ROCK, ETC.

The ongoing Respekt Plus festival presents Musafir, who bill themselves as "The Gypsies of Rajasthan" and are distantly related to the Roma of Europe. Their concerts are often freewheeling events with some magic tricks, puppetry and other diversions thrown in. See Stage, page B6. Sept. 9 at 7:30, Palác Akropolis

You will never get a real chance see Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots together. The Seattle Revival Party presents some local cover bands that try to present a good imitation for grunge fans. Sept. 9 at 8, Vagon

An old-fashioned brand of soap lends its name to Elida, a musical performance written by violinist and vocalist Iva Bittová and performed by her along with the New York–based ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars. The group was named Ensemble of the Year in 2005 by Musical America International Directory of the Performing Arts. See Stage, page B5. Sept. 11–12 at 8, Divadlo Archa

Czech chanson singer Radůza was nominated for a BBC World Music Award but still prefers small venues. Sept. 11–13 at 8, Balbínova poetická hospůdka

Swedish rock band the Bones like everything from Elvis Presley to Motörhead, but their live shows lean toward punk. This is their only date in the Czech Republic. Sept. 13 at 9, Futurum

OUT OF TOWN

Kolín's municipal theater and an island host the Mimoriál festival of nonverbal theater. France's Cirque Baroque headlines the event with some help from acts from Spain, Russia and the Czech Republic. Sept. 8–10, Kolín

Head west for the International Theater Festival in Plzeň, which starts Sept. 14 and runs to Sept. 22 in the city that was liberated by American forces 60 years ago.
