CLASSICAL

A student of Protestant sacred music in Cologne and later Stuttgart, Andreas Meisner joins the International Organ Festival with interpretations of a symphonic chorale by Karg-Elert, preludes and a fugue by J.S. Bach, a piece by Frederichs, and finally a sonata by Reubke. Sept. 1 at 7, Bazilika sv. Jakuba

Prague 9 certainly lacks the cachet of many of the lower-numbered sections of the city. They try to make up for it with the Nine Times Nine, or Devetkrát devet, festival. The festival runs Sept. 1 through 29 with events in churches, a park and the Town Hall. The first concert is the Prague Woodwind Quintet Sept. 1 at 6 at Kostel sv. Václava in Prosek.

Marian Lapsansky´ and Jan Simon play Poulenc's Concerto for two pianos with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra. Flutist Jirí Válek and violinist Martin Válek lend a hand on Martinu?'s Concerto for flute, violin and orchestra. Dvorák's Symphony No. 5 finishes the program. Sept. 2 at 7:30, Dvorák Hall, Rudolfinum

Conductor Vladimír Válek kicks off the 110th season of the Czech Philharmonic with three works by Czech composers: Fibich's symphonic poem Záboj, Slavoj and Ludek; Janácek's rhapsody Taras Bulba; and Dvorák's Symphony No. 7. Sept. 7 at 8, Dvorák Hall, Rudolfinum

DANCE

Diverse music by Philip Glass, Dead Can Dance and other sources finds its way into Bronislav Roznos' Time of Pain. Six pieces explore the universal theme of suffering. Sept. 5 at 7, State Opera

The dance project Photo Dance by Oren Tischler-Vertigo and Jan Tichy´ has its Czech premiere. Sept. 7 at 8, Duncan Centre

French-based choreorgrapher Paco Decina presents his new piece, Salto nel vuoto, which he developed with six dancers. Sept. 7 at 7:30, Divadlo Komedie

JAZZ, ROCK, ETC.

Santa Cruz, California, punk band the Lonely Kings have been known to play wearing old-fashioned Chinese peasant costumes. Germany's La Par Force and Eastern Star open the show. Sept. 2 at 7, Rock Café

A 1971 film about two kids lost in the Australian outback provided the Walkabouts with inspiration for a name. The Seattle band was active at the same time as the grunge explosion but opted for a different, less-aggressive sound. They have had more success in Europe than in the States. Singer and actress Tonya Graves sits in with Stepán Smetácek & New Orchestra of Dreams. Smetácek has been active in several bands including Krausberry and Lucie. New Orchestra of Dreams, which started as a one-man project, now has a big lineup that fuses a wide range of influences that even include Iron Maiden. Sept. 7 at 7:30, Palác Akropolis

OTHER

The area around Hanvasky´ pavilón at the west edge of Letná Park has several tents for the Letní Letna festival of circus. The main attraction is France's Cirque Baroque performing Ningen, a circus show about Japanese author Yukio Mishima. Ningen runs to Sept. 4, with shows nightly at 9.

British poet Keith Armstrong has given poetry readings from Bulgaria to Kenya. His latest collection is titled Imagined Corners. Sept. 6 at 6, the Globe Bookstore

OUT OF TOWN

The outdoor festival season is winding down. Semtex Culture Brno gives a last gasp with British "dub-soul-trip-rock-meditation-trance-pop" band Morcheeba as the headline act. Local bands Tata Bojs, Wohnout, Moimir Papalescu & the Nihilists and Skyline fill out the day. Sept. 3 starting at 2, Mariánské údolí, Brno
