How to battle multicultural terroristsPostview | Search restaurants | Archives July 20th, 2005 issue The Prague Post applauds our brave president, Václav Klaus, for finally blowing the lid off this terrorism thing when all our other elected leaders are clearly too timid or polite to do so. As Klaus finally revealed to the world, or at least the readership of the Czech daily Mladá fronta Dnes July 16, the real root of the problem is "artificial multiculturalism," which he linked to terrorism in the West. As Klaus explained it, multiculturalism is a "tragic mistake of the current Western civilization for which we all pay dearly," adding that "excessive openness" creates "suitable soil" for trouble. Since that insightful interview, naturally Klaus' rivals in Czech politics have been scrambling to criticize the comments as ridiculous, xenophobic and anachronistic. But we know very well that's just jealousy because they didn't think of them first. Prime Minister Jiří Paroubek can comfortably sit back and say of Klaus' remarks, "I do not understand this and he will have to explain it to me sometime." But that's only because Paroubek wants to debate our poor president, who is founder of the opposition Civic Democratic Party, for obvious political reasons. And when Deputy Prime Minister Zdeněk Škromach chimes in, calling Klaus' statements "utter nonsense because there was always migration in the past" and adding "it is impossible for countries to be closed when the world is being globalized," we sense an all-too-common attitude of defeatism. Hey, the Berlin Wall stood for over 25 years who says you can't stop foreign cultures and peoples cold as they try to integrate into your society? With enough razor wire and machine gun nests, you can be pretty darn sure it will take one brave Polish plumber to cross our borders, baby. Here, then, is a handy clip-and-save list of examples to help those people who say they still don't understand Klaus' argument that multiculturalism is a breeding ground for terrorists: (1) Terrorists like cheap sunglasses. Who do you think is selling them this stuff? That's right, it's those same Vietnamese merchants at the market stalls where you picked up those 30 Kč stretchy boxer shorts from China. Didn't you stop to think there might be a hidden price to such bargains? (2) Terrorists hate tuba music of the kind still played in west Bohemian beerhalls, much preferring really loud, distorted world pop, such as you hear in the marketplaces of Iraq. Continuing to let Prague restaurants play this latter "music" is just asking for trouble. Let's take the initiative and ban it now forever. Think of future generations. (3) You never know where terrorists are going to come from or even what they'll look like. It's easy to get a false sense of security by stopping all Middle Eastern–looking folks at the border, but today's threats to our homeland could come from anywhere say Norway. Don't laugh: It's got miles of unguarded coastal borders, they're not very nice to whales and, like many terrorist-producing countries, they have oil. Now we're not implying anything about Norwegians, of course ... but isn't the continued free movement of pickled herring in the Czech Republic just an invitation to some terrible incident in the future?
