For a formerly underground sport, skateboarding is doing its best to go legit, even forming an international championship series, World Cup Skateboarding. One of only three European WCS events, Mystic Skate Cup took place July 8–10 in Prague, bringing together 180 riders from 26 countries for competition in vertical (aka half-pipe) and street skating, both of which took place in a custom-built facility on Štvanice Island.

With 12th place in the street competition, Prague's Tomáš Vintr came up with the best local showing. Top prizes went to the Gauls: The street winner was three-time world champion Bastien Salabanzi of France, followed by Diego Olevio Santo of Brazil and Austen Seaholm of the United States. On the half-pipe, first place went to France's Terence Bougdour, followed by two more Brazilians, Rodrigo Menezes and Marcelo Kosake.

Skateboarding may be flirting with the mainstream, but the competition still gives a booby prize for the "gnarliest slam." This year, that trophy went to Fabio Sleiman. "It was on the drop-in," says Daniel Petřík, a spectator who witnessed Sleiman's 20-foot fall. "He did it twice. After the first one he took a minute, got a drink and shook it off. And then he got up there and did it all over again."
