Popovich has learned good Czech from his girlfriend and would like to work as a barman, a DJ or a party organizer. So far, that has proved impossible: As an illegal immigrant from Ukraine, he has no official documents. With estimates of 200,000 Ukrainians in the same position as Popovich, they constitute the biggest minority group in the Czech Republic. Legal Ukrainians are far fewer. The Czech Statistical Office puts the number who have permanent residency permits and permission to stay over 90 days at around 78,300.
