ČTV documentary angers Muslims

Critics cite hidden camera in mosque, biased editing

Jiří Ovečka stands by his choice to use the secretly filmed footage.

A Czech Television (ČTV) documentary is threatening to raise tensions within the country's Muslim population to a level not seen here during weeks of recent global unrest over the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Ambassadors to the Czech Republic from Arab nations and members of the Czech Muslim community say they are outraged by a documentary aired on ČTV last fall that used hidden camera footage of conversations in a Prague mosque and spliced it — they say unfairly — with images of terrorism.

"The reaction is usually immediate, while in this case it took a month for any reaction to appear and two months for it to grow," says Jiří Ovečka, the documentary's producer. "It was the same with the Muhammad cartoons."

Protests came just weeks after dozens of European publications, including several in the Czech Republic, printed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad — considered blasphemous in Islam. Riots over the cartoons in the Muslim world resulted in more than 100 deaths.

In its own way, the cartoon controversy rekindled anger over the documentary.

The Council of Arabic Ambassadors to Prague is now renewing its protest about the undercover footage first aired Oct. 7 in the documentary I, Muslim on the public station ČT2.

Members of the Muslim community first filed a complaint with the Czech Radio and Television Broadcasting Council (RRTV) that month, claiming the program is biased, provokes fear and manipulates footage to promote false stereotypes.

"It was made in a confrontational style," says Vladimír Sáňka, head of the Islamic Center in Prague. "We see it as a one-sided documentary, which evokes a distorted look at Islam in the eyes of the Czech public."

RRTV spokesman Petr Bartoš says the complaint is on the RRTV's agenda, but it has yet to debate the issue. If found guilty, ČTV would face a fine of up to 10 million Kč ($416,000).

ČTV declined to comment, saying it is waiting for the RRTV to rule.

OFFENSE TAKEN

  • What it is: Czech Television airs a documentary called I, Muslim, showing undercover footage of Muslims inside a Prague mosque

  • Why it was done: According to the producer, to learn what the "true, real stance" of Czech Muslims on Islamization of the Czech Republic

  • The reaction: The Council of Arabic Ambassadors condemns the program, calling it a deliberate attempt to distort the truth

  • Where it stands: The Czech Radio and Television Broadcasting Council has yet to decide on the issue. It can fine Čzech Television up to 10 million Kč ($416,000)
  • Hidden feelings

The footage in I, Muslim shows a reporter pretending to be someone interested in converting to Islam. He conducts several conversations with members of the mosque, located in Černý Most, about Islam, Europe, terrorism and the role of women.

Ovečka says he stands behind his choice to use the hidden camera footage.

"I wanted to get real opinions of the local Muslim community on the issue — find out what the differences are between Czech and foreign Islam," he says.

One Muslim in the documentary compares Islamic terrorists to Jan Palach, the Czech student who committed suicide by setting himself on fire in protest of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Another says Islamic law should be implemented in the Czech Republic, including the death penalty for adultery, Ovečka says.

"I have to say with 100 percent certainty that by using hidden camera I have learned things that I would never have learned otherwise," he says. "The result was alarming, and if not for the hidden camera, I would have never had any of this footage."

    Skewed view

The documentary's editing is drawing the most criticism.

Marek Čaněk, a project coordinator with the Prague Multicultural Center, says the documentary was edited in such a way that it fed into pre-existing xenophobia.

Opponents of the documentary cite its footage of the mosque, intercut with images of terrorist attacks, without any proven connection between the two.

They also say the use of a hidden camera makes it seem as though such discussions in mosques are secretive, when in fact anyone can film inside a mosque with permission.

"I consider it a scandal that it has been produced and broadcast by public television," Čaněk says. "It fits in the general frame of fear of Islam and Muslims coming to us from other parts of Europe. People are afraid without knowing what exactly they fear."

Ovečka says that any xenophobia the documentary created was not the result of anything he did.

"It's like this: During official shooting they were peaceful, nice," he says. "Hidden camera footage showed something else — aversion, hatred toward Europe, the entire world, and a mild attitude toward terrorism."

    History of bias

Czech public television is "marred by excessive politicization," according to an independent report released by the European Union Monitoring and Advocacy Program (EUMAP) Feb. 20.

Eva Rybková, the EUMAP reporter for the Czech Republic, says she has not seen the I, Muslim program, but did say that the station has faced several cases of sanctions for biased reporting in the past.

"ČTV editors are aware of what impartial and balanced news content should look like, and it tries to give space to both sides of the dispute," she says. "But this doesn't mean that ČTV broadcasts were never biased."

Rybková says the situation has improved since the protests against managerial changes at the station in 2001 and the arrival of new general director Jiří Janeček in July 2003, but she adds that there is still the need to distinguish ČTV from its commercial counterparts.

"The content on ČTV is still the station's attempt to compete with commercial stations," she says.

    Reader's Comments:
[25/11/2006] : I've watched the documentary previously. There is nothing imflamatory about what the (brave) reporter does. He simply acts like a muslim returning to the fold and lets others do most of the talking.

As mentioned, the most chilling momemt, was when the islamic leader, in an open interview, states that their aim is simply to become the majority population and turn the Czech Republic into an islamic state.

[23/08/2006] : I find this recent article incredibly appropriate to the comments about non-muslims "misinterpreting" the koran. But, I'm sure we'll just be again "taking his words out of context" or being called islamophobes. Pay close attention to the 4th paragraph. Hmmmm....wonder where I've seen that quote before?

"Radical Muslim convicted for making death threats"

    By The Copenhagen Post

The hate speech conviction of the spokesman for Hizb-ut-Tahrir could lead to the group's dissolution

A standing room only crowd looked on Thursday as Fadi Ahmad Abdel Latif was handed a guilty verdict for threatening the life of PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen and inciting to kill Jews.

A unanimous panel of judges in a Copenhagen city court found Adbel Latif, the spokesman for the Danish branch of radical Muslim organisation Hizb-ut-Tahir, guilty on all three counts for which he was charged, including for distributing fliers in 2004 urging Mulsims to 'kill their leaders' if they prevented them from helping their 'brothers' fighting in Fallujah.

He was also convicted for threatening the lives of Jews by calling on Muslims to 'kill them all, wherever you find them'.

It is the second time he has been convicted of threatening Jews.

Abdel Latif claimed that the flyers had been misinterpreted. He appealed the conviction and the three month jail sentence.

[22/08/2006] : Summayah: The Koran is not a history book. It is supposedly the word of Allah thru Gabriel and told to Muhammed. It is filled with instructions on how to live your life as a good muslim. People don't take verses out of context when they talk about slaying the unbeliever where they find them. It is commanded. As far as your comment about the "actions of muslims" being the problem, if those muslims would stop quoting the koran as they murder people around the globe, you may have a point. What about the immams we see advocating fighting the infidel? That is political islam and it's aggressive and dangerous. One can see how "peaceful" islam is by just reading the text.

[14/07/2006] : Vladimir, you cannot pick up a Qur'an and read selected verses that you wish to WRONGLY self interpret. You would have to read the previous and latter verses in order to understand what the so called hate verses imply. The Qur'an does not teach "turn the other cheeck", it teaches fight back those who fight you and the best of you are those who treat women best. There are logical reasons for ALL Islamic teachings and you will come to know them yet refuse to acknowledge them due to your mind been infiltrated by books that misinterpret and seek to destroy the truth.

Your problem lies within the actions of Muslims...but not ISLAM. No matter what anyone says..Islam will always be the fastest growing religion in the WORLD..and it's up to every individual to educate themselves about all religion including Islam and it's origins to the Abrahamic faith.

[11/04/2006] : the comment of Vladimir is self explanatory and is actually the true image of islam. moslems themselves know that what we are saying is true. for every moslem, there is an agenda-the total islamization of the whole world. without a secret coverage like this, you will never get to know these things from them.
i pity some moslems who only follow what they are taught and don't read the qur'an themselves. Islam supports violence and it's part and parcel of the religion.i wonder why there no tolerance in islam at all. they 'defame' other religions but any little ugly comment about islam sends every moslem mad passionately. the film just shows the true picture of islam everywhere in the world. the earlier the free world recognizes this the better for al of humanity.

[26/03/2006] : I roll my eyes when I read comments like those from Angie from Toronto, who is, most likely, simply reiterating the taqiyaah arguments she has heard from her Muslim friends and colleagues. Dear Angie, I have read the Qur'an. I have found a multitude of hateful passages and direct instructions to commit murder and crucifixion in the name of Allah and the spread of Islam throughout the globe. And no, they haven't been 'taken out of context', for it is not just me who sees those violent espousals as what they really are - violent espousals.

I suggest you pick up a copy of the Qur'an and take note of verses such as 5:33, 8:39, 9:5, 9:73, 47:4, 48:29, etc., etc. Further, if you do not find these versees convincing enough (although they are a sacred word for every believing Muslim) pick up some of the hadith from al-Bukhari or Muslim, which will reveal to you that Muhammad engaged in sexual intercourse with a 9-year old girl, committed mass executions and betrayed his promises. Then pick up Ibn Ishaq's biography of Muhammad and therein you'll find a story of Muhammad cowardly killing an old man (sic!) in his sleep simply for critcising his prophetness, and then sacntioning his followers to murder Marwan's daughter, a defenseless woman. And after you've done all of this, recall that millions of Muslims all of the world regard Muhammad as the noblest of all men, whose behaviour is to be mimicked in every single aspect of life.

By the way, are you even familiar with the concept of the taqiyyah? Have you thought that you might have become a victim of it at some point during your conversations with Muslims?

Please, get a copy of one of Ibn Warraq's books. Maybe he, a former Muslim, will convince you.
    Vladimir Polsky

[10/03/2006] : I roll my eyes when I read comments like those from Paul from L.A. Where did you learn that Islam is a violent ideology, from the Qur'an? Have you read anything about what their prophets said? Or did you learn your theory from CNN, NBC and FOX combined? I am not quite sure how what you said about the religious duty of every Muslim is any different from the Crusades. Separate church and state? Hmm...let's see, what is printed on every dollar of your country? "In God We Trust". You know, I am not even religious at all, and I am not impressed by how women are treated currently in all these Islam dominant countries, yet I can't stand your opinion. Just because you don't like how a religious theory is being practiced by some people, does that mean you can just simply demeaning their fundamentals? Perhaps you should look further into the difference and commonality of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. You just might be surprised how much they might be linked. Any by the way, Allah simply means "GOD". Get it?
    Angie Lin
    Toronto, Canada
[09/03/2006] : I roll my eyes when I read comments like those from Liam, who notes that violence was committed in Jesus' name even though Jesus never advocated it. The same is NOT true of Islam. Islam is a religion and violent political ideology. There is no "render unto Caesar", Islam recognizes no separation of church and state, and it is the religious duty of every Muslim to bring a worldwide Islamic caliphate to fruition. Yes there are millions of peaceful Muslims who are in denial about this aspect of their religion, but if so much violence was committed IN SPITE OF Jesus' teachings, how much worse is it when the Prophet teaches violent expansion and subjugation? Please get a clue.
    Paul Rodgers

[09/03/2006] : Once again the world rushes to judge a race of people based on the opinion of only a few.
When are people going to realize that it is not so black and white but varying shades of grey? I'm a Catholic and quite aware that more people have died in Christ's name than any other but Jesus never advocated violence, just a few extremists. This is also true of Islam. So when you have reactionists saying ridiculous things like "Islam is a religion of hate and death" you are no better than they are.

And what is more curious is the comment by the "The Council of Arabic Ambassadors".

It seems that the Muslim community is being over seen and possibly nurtured in someway to support the Arab cause. That the Council of Arabic Ambassadors would be interested possibly shows that they are taking an active interest in the Islamization of Europe. And understandably so, if Europe comes under Islam, then Europe comes under the Arabs.
